    ‘73 20hp carb help

Confirmed with a twist. I put the original needle back in, readjusted the float, and discovered I left the small jet out of the side of the pick up tube. Put it back together, it started fairly easily, Adjusted the idle mix and it’s running as it should.

    ‘83 7.5hp powerhead gasket

Freshwater. Mating surfaces were clean with no apparent damage. I prepped it with some light 1000 or so grit to clean and remove any of the old gasket.

    ‘73 20hp carb help

3rd party kit. I think I found the root issue digging around rebuild videos on YouTube. The Merc kit includes the same “new” style needle with a note that it isn’t compatible with the BA-1A and some others. I’ll swap it back, reset the float, and see what happens. Spark is good, compression...

    ‘83 7.5hp powerhead gasket

working on the motor in the title. The powerhead base gasket leaked exhaust when I got it, so I replaced it. New gasket lets exhaust out as well. Should there be sealer on the gasket? The leak seems to be on the side facing the pan, not the block.

    ‘73 20hp carb help

Picked up the motor in the title. It has a BA-1A carb. I bought a rebuild kit and found a couple differences. 1- the carb as I got it seemed to have 2 fuel diagrams in the pump. Kit came with one, so that’s what I put back in. 2- The kit, which was listed as a Tillotson kit for this carb...

    83 7.5hp, smoke from cowl

No loose bolts, the video makes it sound strange. I pulled the power head. The old gasket had some form of yellow sealant on it. Would that have been done at the factory? Screw heads and such make me think this has been apart before. Also discovered there’s a missing grommet where the water...

    83 7.5hp, smoke from cowl

Side note, I did put a new impeller in it before running it. Possible I left something out?

    83 7.5hp, smoke from cowl

Tinkering with an 82 7.5hp. I have it running great, but getting a lot of smoke coming out from under the engine pan and some under the hood itself. Bad base gasket maybe? I don’t know the history of this motor as I picked it up as a tinker toy.

    Old 30lb Motorguide

Valid point. It’s effectively for the enjoyment of trying to figure it out. I’ll disassemble most anything once, and have never had occasion to tinker with one of these. They look deceptively simple enough.

    Old 30lb Motorguide

Got an old 30lb Motorguide Pro with a boat I bought. It doesn’t work, so I decided to tinker with it. This model only seems to use a speed wheel, a micro switch, and a 3 way toggle. No circuit board. The motor spins with what I would call normal resistance by hand. It has Black/red 10ga wires...

Plug wires for ‘71 Merc 20hp

Correction, it does look like 18-5227 and 18-5228 cross reference to the original wire kit 84-813715A1.

Plug wires for ‘71 Merc 20hp

I found a reference that sierra 18-5227-1 would work, but can’t find a solid chart that shows it. In looking at them, they have nuns that look like they might be designed to fit both, just hoping to verify before I order. I see Sierra makes a kit that has all the parts to make 6 of them, I was...

    Stripped drain plug

That’s my immediate plan until I maybe work out something for the original.
